Hampstead Village Guesthouse: Kathi Diamont Review

With Kind Permission copied from Kathi Diamond

Hampstead Village Guesthouse:

I stayed for the entire two weeks at the
Hampstead Village Guest-house. Although highly praised in several guides to London’s best bed-and-breakfast hotels, I found the double-fronted Victorian house quite by accident and extraordinary good luck. Tuck-ed away off quiet Pilgrim’s Lane, which runs between the bustling High Street and the heath, the guest house is a true treasure.

Annemarie van der Meer, a transplant from Holland, opened her spacious three-storey Victorian home to paying guests in the early 1980s. Since then, the bedrooms are usually filled, if not with her own children and their friends, with repeat visitors who couldn’t imagine staying anywhere else. Built in 1872, the B&B maintains a warm, homey atmosphere, with a decidedly bohemian flavour.

The Hampstead Village Guesthouse is not for everyone: this is truly a home. Books, personal items and knickknacks, most frequently blue Delft from Holland, are stacked from floor to ceiling. The bedroom doors lock only from the inside. A dog by the name of Marley lives here, too.

But every room comes with marvellous atmosphere, a small refrigerator, an electric kettle, hair dryer, telephone, comfortable beds, lovely antiques, good reading lamps and a staggering range of books. Weather permitting, the full English breakfast of eggs, bacon, fried tomato and mushrooms, toast with preserves and good strong coffee is served outside in the back garden.

Only 15 minutes from Picadilly Circus
